Overview

Note: The V16 VHF Aviation Radio Transceiver replaces the MGL V6.

The V16 Com Radio is the latest generation and a new family of RF products by MGL Avionics. Launched in 2018 in the US, the V16 is the first in a new ecosystem of Com Radios, Nav Radios and controllers.

Note: This radio is non-TSO?d and is for use in Experimental and light-sport aircraft and aircraft not having a Type Certificate prohibiting the use of non-TSO?d radios and equipment.

Features

Modular Design:

The V16 is a split design remote-mount Com Radio that is controlled via a separate controller/EFIS.

Pick Your Controls:

The V16 Com Radio can be controlled by a mix (and any number) of Razor (P/N: 11-16598) or Vega (P/N: 11-16599) Control Heads. This means you can have dual left seat and right seat radio displays and controls, or front and back (for tandem seat aircraft). It can also be controlled directly by an MGL Avionics iEFIS (Gen 3 and above), with or without Razor/Vega Controls (sold separately, see accessories).

Big Power:

The V16 Com Radio boasts 10 Watts of Transmit Power (un-modulated carrier).

Low Cost:

Designed with modern components and ingenuity for the lowest cost.

SL30/SL40:

When the V16 is paired with a Razor/Vega control, the control can be connected to any EFIS or display that communicates with SL30/SL40 protocols, to tune the radio and load frequency lists.

2 Channel VOX Intercom:

The V16 includes a 2-place intercom with a wide-range VOX system. Multiple headsets can be connected to the Passenger channel if necessary. The advanced voice-activated intercom provides clear audio in noisy cockpits. In extreme cases the intercom can be activated via a switch connected to V16 (intercom PTT).

RX Playback ?Say Again?:

The V16 can replay up to a minute of the last several transmissions. Miss a clearance from ATC? No problem - simply hit the Playback button on your Razor Control head or use a switch connected to discrete input in V16 Com to replay the last transmission. Hit the button again to play the previous transmission.

Designed for OEM Use:

A full Interface Control Document (ICD) is published to allow for third party use of the V16 Com radio. Ideal for drone / UAV applications or for integrating with full glass panel systems where a remote VHF Com is required.

Specifications

Channel Spacing: 25KHz or 8.33KHz
Input Voltage: 12/14V and 24/28V (10-28 Volts)
Current Draw at 13.8V Supply: RX: 0.3A and TX: 2.5A (10 Watts)
Weight: 10.6 oz (300 grams)

Benefits

Auxiliary Audio/Music input with auto-mute
TX Interlock for dual radio installations
Built-in SWR Meter to check antenna matching. Good antenna match will result in VSWR of 1.3 or less (ideal would be 1.0, which would mean no reflected power.
Remote flip-flop
Scan (monitor standby frequency).

Michael W 20.12.2019	I am extremely impressed with this radio. I am using the internal intercom and it is crisp and clear. It is lightweight and I had no issues building my own harness. I paired it with the Vega controller to replace an intercom and an ICOM a200and still shed some weight. I had one technical question and they responded quickly.
Tom S 23.10.2019	I installed the MGL V16 with a Vega control head in my RV-4. So far I am highly satisfied. My criteria for replacing the failed radio in my airplane were (1) 10-watt transmit, and (2) ability to monitor the standby frequency (as I have room for only one radio in the small RV-4 panel). The V16 meets these criteria (MGL calls the monitor function scanning.) The radio is very small and light. I removed 3.5 lbs of old radio and wiring, and the V16 and Vega with wiring came to just over 1 lb. Installation was mostly straightforward, although I thought the manual was not clear that the included 120-ohm resistor is necessary for the CAN bus to operate. Performance of the radio has been highly satisfactory. With the Vega control head the comm radio frequencies can be entered from my GRT Sport EX EFIS via RS232, or from my cell phone by its Bluetooth connection to the GRT Sport EX. Channel lists can be cycled and flip-flopped from remote buttons which I have mounted on my throttle, while a third button mounted on my stick is programmed to activate the say again feature on the V16 to replay any of the last several received transmissions. All functions work as expected. During testing I listened to ATIS and had conversations with aircraft in the pattern 99 miles away. All were loud and clear. The Vega control head can show average transmit power and VSWR (a measure of antenna matching.) On 122.8 I was showing 12 watts and VSWR of 1.1 both very satisfactory. The MGL manual specifies RG-58 antenna cable, but I was able to use the supplied crimp-type coax connector with my existing RG-400 antenna cable with no problem. The display on the Vega control head is bright and readable in daylight conditions and dims automatically or manually for low-light conditions (not yet tested.) I am very pleased with the MGL V16 and Vega control.
Eric V 29.07.2020	Replacing my older VHF radio because it didnt receive well, the MGL unit does not have this issue. Receives and transmits great. Had to work on some of my audio wiring because it transmits almost too well and I was getting some RF feedback. The manual talks about some fixes and after I fixed the shields on some of my audio wiring all is good.

Q: Will this MGL V6 radio serve as Com and Nav as well?

Ответ:This is a com radio only.

Q: What type of connection is required on the antenna cable to mate with the V16?

Ответ:This connector is an SMA connector. We carry an adapter that will convert it to a BNC (p/n: 11-16957).

Q: If I purchase the MGL V16 transceiver plus the control head, is the wiring harness included?

Ответ:No, The wiring harness is not included. MGL standard harness part # 11-16600 is for experimental aircraft use only.

Q: When multiple control heads are used do they all display the same frequency? Or can the copilot have a different frequency in use on his display?

Ответ:The control heads would be connected in parallel meaning they will be displaying the same frequencies.

Q: Can this MGL V16 radio be used with four headsets and a loudspeaker?

Ответ:The VHF radio only allows for Pilot and Co-Pilot. For additional headset jacks you will need an audio panel or intercom.

Q: Can MGL V16 be used with David Clark headsets?

Ответ:Yes, as long as the plug style on the headsets matches the jacks connected to the radio these will work fine together.

Q: will the RAMI AV-534 / AV-534L VHF COM ANTENNA FAA TSO be a suitable match for this transceiver?

Ответ:Yes this Rami antenna is compatible with P/N 11-16597.
