The D2 Air features a polished stainless-steel bezel, a durable 30 mm Corning Gorilla Glass 3 lens, and a vivid AMOLED Touchscreen color display. With the smallest, yet brightest, screen in the D2 series, this watch weighs in at only 1.6 oz. With the ability to change out the bands for a more customized look, the D2 Air comes with a black leather band and black silicone band.

There When You Need It ? Pre, During, and Post Flight Features

Access aviation weather, including METARs and TAFs, to see winds, visibility, barometric pressure and more. View airport information or Navigate Direct-To a location or waypoint in the worldwide aeronautical database or activate a path to a nearby airport using the Nearest function. Use the instrument-like HSI course needle to stay centered on your desired flight path.

The D2 Air allows customers to view the runway orientation (including wind components when paired with a smartphone), lengths, and airport frequencies, as they approach their destination. The built-in barometric altimeter can also notify the pilot when a specific altitude is reached, and a vibration alert can be set to alert when supplemental oxygen is required. In addition to alerts, the D2 Air incorporates a wrist-based Pulse Ox sensor to help monitor oxygen saturation levels, which is especially useful in-flight and during high altitude activities.

D2 Air can also connect wirelessly to the Garmin Pilot app and enables wireless flight plan transfer from Garmin Pilot to the D2 Air and allows the user to view the waypoints included in the route. With wireless connectivity to a smartphone the D2 Delta series also makes quick work of flight logging and other record keeping tasks. During takeoff, the watch will detect the aircraft?s change in altitude and automatically initiate the logbook function ? recording date, duration, total flight time, and route and can automatically log this information via the user?s smartphone to flyGarmin.com and the Garmin Pilot app.

This is another quality product from Garmin. As for the watch design, I am pleased with the ratio of width to thickness -- I particularly appreciate how thin they made this version, especially in comparison to their other aviation watches. Its flat enough that youll barely note it on the wrist. I will also acknowledge that some reviewers have said it seemed a little cheap -- Im not sure I agree with that. With the leather band it carries itself well -- discreet and unassuming, but appealing to see on the wrist. I am also very pleased with Garmins quick-change band design -- better than Apples, it makes for ordering more bands and actually using them something you might consider on a daily basis depending on mission (eg flying day vs. a run vs. working in the shop). Theres a band for every use case. I give it a 4-star rating as someone who has lived with an Apple watch since its first edition. Having this watch replace it has meant some sacrifices. The Garmin apps on the watch seem smart enough, but the integration with the phone through the Garmin app itself is less complete, and of course you get none of the app integrations from apps you are used to using on your wrist if youre a Watch kind of person. I didnt think I used that many, until not having them on the D2 Air. Again, 4-stars to Garmin for getting their suite of apps mostly there, if youre willing to start leveraging the Garmin phone app more-fully. Finally, as for the aviation features of the watch, heres another place Im 4-star for now. I am not sure what I was expecting, but it was more than I see for aviation. I have been waiting for the indispensable aviation watch to complement my iPad & iPhone running ForeFlight. To me, the D2 Air would probably be ideal and a 5-star winner for a pilot who *only* uses Garmin Pilot as an app. I think here, the Garmin integration would be outstanding, and Id strongly recommend the D2 Air watch. For those of us using ForeFlight and living with the Apple Watch, perhaps we look at the D2 Air as a great way to have a full-time pulse oximeter when we fly, some cool aviation features, but beyond that, nothing that the combo of other devices I mentioned wont fill. Ive yet to find any watch that would let me leave (or have me want to leave) the iPhone or iPad behind on a flight, so for now, the benefits I see are really that the watch is attractive, fits well, has good viewing surface, and has a built-in pulse oximeter designed with pilots in mind. If youre on the fence, I think like me, youll be pleased with the decision to buy -- just be realistic about how much additional advantage you expect it to deliver beyond the devices upon which you already depend today. Its a quality product Im pleased to own, and look forward to wearing it every day.
