The GDL 39 offers the complete package that combines a dual-link ADS-B receiver and Garmin?s industry-leading GPS receiver into a single unit that streams ADS-B datalink traffic and subscription-free weather to select Garmin aviation portables including the aeraÂ® 796/795, aera 500 series, GPSMAPÂ® 696/695, G3X? experimental flight display and select Garmin Pilot? app compatible devices.

Subscription-free weather information is continuously broadcast using the FAA?s 978 MHz UAT uplink and is similar to the basic services offered by leading commercial satellite weather providers.

Weather services include access to NEXRAD imagery (which can also be put in motion as new data is collected on select devises), METARs, TAFs, winds and temperatures aloft, PIREPs, NOTAMs and more.

Pilots can also receive ADS-B datalink traffic information with alerts to help identify potential traffic conflicts. In addition to receiving traffic data from ADS-B ground stations, the dual-link GDL 39 features direct air-to-air ADS-B reception on both ADS-B frequencies (1090 and 978 UAT) to provide a more comprehensive view of potential flight path conflicts. In order to maximize available traffic information for the display, the aircraft should also be equipped with a compliant ADS-B ?out? solution like the GDL 88 or GTX 330ES/33/23 ES transponders.

The GDL 39 provides weather and traffic information via wireless support for compatible mobile devices like the iPad and Andriod tablets via built-in BluetoothÂ® connection and wired connections for compatible Garmin portables. The Bluetooth connection also allows two devices to connect to GDL 39 at once wirelessly, making it possible for two-pilot crews to view traffic and weather on separate devices from the same GDL 39. Garmin products including the aera 795/796, 500/510/550/560, GPSMAPÂ® 695/696 and G3X series can connect to the GDL 39, as well as an external power source, via a wired connection. Traffic only compatible displays include theGPSMAP 496/495 and GPSMAP 396.

The portable design of the GDL 39 also includes a built-in WAAS GPS receiver, which brings Garmin?s industry-leading GPS location information to wirelessly connected mobile devices. The GDL 39 integrates seamlessly with the Garmin Pilot app to support its navigation functions with reliable and accurate GPS capability.

Kirk K 26.04.2013	I have used the GDL39 with an iphone 5 for several months now with no problems. The additional battery will last roughly 4 hours. The ADS-B weather and information in flight is invaluable.

When you first pair it the GDL 39 must be able to pick up a GPS signal, which means pair it the first time outside. We tried to do it in the office, no dice. This instruction is not really front and center and we found it on the Garmin Pilot app not in the instruction book.
Ron W 15.08.2013	What a Great piece of equipment. Always a pleasant surprise when something is even better than you anticipated. Just flew from DFI to JYO and return, it worked flawlessly. Received the unit last week, coupled it to my 696 placed it in my car so the software could update imagine my surprise when after the update finished I picked up weather. While flying it typically shows receiving 5 stations. If you already own a Garmin 695 or newer this is must have, worth every penny. At the airport had it wired to my 696, Bluetoothed to my Nexus 7 2nd Gen, and a friend had it Bluetoothed to his Iphone. Awesome
Mark M 07.04.2013	Just flew 20 IFR hours across the southern US with the GDL39 and the Garmin iPad app. Worked as advertised. Both current NEXRAD and METARS were invaluable on this trip. The Garmin app continues to improve with every release and there were no integration issues with the GDL39. Purchased the external battery and it lasted right at 4 hrs. Left on the glareshield until it became really hot and it did not shutdown once.
Dr. V 14.02.2013	I just bought the GDL39 and bluetooth it to an iPad using GarminPilot ap... works great! The ap is very easy to use, has geo-ref approach plates, safetaxi airport diagrams, and received weather at 2,000' AGL, traffic picked up on the ground and I'm flying out of KEVV, not a busy place. I don't have a ADS-B out transponder so I'm dependent on other aircraft to trigger the ground station but that hasn't been a problem. I had been a faithful Foreflight user but read some concerns about Stratus. I also like that two devices can bluetooth to the one unit. The Garmin product works flawlessly! My Long-EZ cockpit is quite filled with LCD screens, may need to get the iPadMini, a safety issue of course, that's my rationale for the wife.

Greg G 08.09.2020	Purchased to feed Bluetooth ADS-B IN to Garmin 760. Works great! Had asked if the antenna can be removed and extended to an outside location. Was told not advised. But, I did try it anyway - using a 12 inch SMA Male RG316 Antenna Extension - Amazon ($6.99 for two). Not a long extension. Works great. Was able to mount the base unit inside the cowling, and mount the removable antenna on the outside in clear view of the sky and horizon.
