Overview

UFM2 is Brian FitzGeralds sixth documentary on aviation matters. It was made to chronicle the current state of Ultralight Flying in America. It features what he calls the five fingers of ultralight flying:

  • 1. Fixed Wings
  • 2. Trikes
  • 3. Powered Parachutes
  • 4. Powered Paragliders
  • 5. Helicopters.
FitzGerald thinks the general public is sadly ignorant of breadth of the Aviation Experience. Mostly they know about Airlines and Military Aviation. While that is all fine and good and he really loves military aviation and the airlines he thinks the general public and particularly the youth have lost sight of the JOY of flying - the real reason for getting up in the air. He does not think enough of them even consider the possibility they can learn to fly or even own a plane. Ultralight Aircraft are colorful and simple to behold. Just looking at them says FUN and ADVENTURE. Because those elements have been woefully absent from the aviation scene for decades, with the exception of Fossett s record breaking flights and the man-powered flight prize competitions of the 60s there is no sustaining draw to aviation for the public - EXCEPT - Ultralight Flying. It provides an accessibility to aviation that he doesn't think most in the Aviation Business appreciate. He suggests it could be that elusive feeder that the industry has sought for years to build interest in aviation at the entry level. One that will lead people to aviation as a career or avocation. In addition to interviews with professionals and experienced sport flyers in UFM2, there are numerous music video segments sprinkled throughout the movie to provide The Romance of Flying. Of particular interest is Lil Prop / Big Prop which is the finale and runs 24 minutes. Lil Prop features music written and recorded by FitzGerald. UFM2 is 3 hours and 15 minutes long allowing for full coverage of the subjects at hand. The DVD version comes on 2 disks. This movie was shot in High Definition in 16:9 ratio (sometimes called widescreen ) and is also available on Blu-Ray. If you watch it on an old technology TV it should have black bars at the top and bottom to be seen correctly. It will look best if you have a newer 16:9 TV. Then it will fill the screen with no black bars.
