Bought these to replace some old wing-tip light indicators that had broken. The description says they will fit the Grimes A-1285 lights. They are definitely different sizes from the bases of these lights. They stick out about a 1/4 inch on the bottom and tops of the bases and are also mismatched on the fronts and backs. It would seem somebody would have sent the company a base for the light and they could match them up correctly, but apparently that has not been done. They are thick plexiglass and very strong, which is nice, but the QA is poor.

These Nav Light Indicators do not fit well on all Greims lights. By the the time redrilled 2 of the holes and sanded the the top to match, I would have been better to start with a sheet of Plexiglass.

It was nice to see a reasonably priced replacement for these NAV light indicators. The good news is that they are made out of a much thicker plastic that the old originals that my Piper Cherokee had installed. The bad news is that the three screw holes did not properly line up, at least on the Cherokee, with the three bolts. For both sides I was able to line up two of the holes, but had to re-drill the third hole. For that reason I downgraded it one star.

Having never seen indicators before, I was skeptical that these were going to work, but they do. For the uninitiated, these go behind the lights backplate, smack up against the wing itself. The little bit of light that is cast straight down (or up) is captured by the acrylic, causing the whole unit to glow. The good is that they are a cheap, simple install and work as intended. Flying around at night puts you a bit more at ease with just a quick glance out to either wingtip to see the gentle glow of the indicator satisfying your curiosity. The bad is that they are not a perfect fit. While I was able to install two pairs on two different aircraft without any modification, I found the screw holes dont precisely line up and the teardrop body is too fat and doesnt match the teardrop shape of the 172 lights. Lot of exposed material that makes them look cheap. However, the 150 has a slightly fatter bulb and hides more of the material. The screw holes could be bigger (no reason why they couldnt be) that would give more freedom of movement during install. The buyer can drill them out himself, though, if needed. Standing next to them, they look a bit odd and look way too long, but sitting in the cockpit you realize that length is required due to dihedral of the wing. I could probably cut off the bottom inch and still see what I need to see. I expect an unwary passerby to walk straight into them some day and break them off, slice their head open or both.

These REQUIRE disconnecting your Grimes NAV lights for installation, because the indicator mounts flush with the wing and the light base must be removed first. Also, if your lights donâ??t already have connectors, you will need to cut them and then install connectors, Finally I found only 1 of the 3 pre-drilled holes in the plastic actually lined up - I had to re-drill the other 2 holes in the plastic. So the actual mounting time per wing was about 1 hour, not the â??few minutesâ? as stated. When I tested everything, with the standard Grimes bulb, under daylight conditions in open T hanger, I could not see any reflection. Hopefully when I replace with the much brighter Navstrobe 40 watt LED I will be able to see something. Hence the lukewarm review at present.
