The GDL 82 Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B) datalink, is the latest addition to the comprehensive lineup of certified ADS-B solutions available from Garmin. GDL 82 is a small, lightweight Universal Access Transceiver (UAT) datalink with a built-in GPS receiver. For aircraft owners looking for an economical and turnkey solution to satisfy the requirements of ADS-B ?Out?, GDL 82 is a straightforward path to meet regulatory requirements. GDL 82 broadcasts on the 978 MHz frequency, providing a rule-compliant ADS-B ?Out? solution for aircraft operating below 18,000? in the United States. Installation is quick and easy because GDL 82 utilizes a patent-pending design, in which GDL 82 is installed in-line with the aircraft?s existing transponder antenna wiring to transmit the necessary ADS-B ?Out? information. The WAAS GPS receiver required for ADS-B compliance is built-in and a GPS antenna is included to offer additional cost-savings for aircraft owners without an existing WAAS GPS on board their aircraft. 82 also contains AutoSquawk interrogation technology, whichGDL interfaces with most Mode C general aviation transponders to synchronize the squawk code and pressure altitude information from the transponder with GDL 82, eliminating the need to install a separate dedicated UAT control panel and altitude encoder. (Please reference the installation manual to determine if the existing Mode C transponder meets compatibility requirements.) This technology not only simplifies installation but also eliminates the burden of the pilot manually keeping the squawk code in sync. Pilots who already utilize an ADS-B ?In? receiver ? such as the GDL 52, GDL 39/GDL 39 3D and the Stratus line of portable solutions ? can receive additional benefits as the GDL 82 complements many existing products on the market. With ADS-B ?Out? participation, pilots using these products have access to a more comprehensive ADS-B ?In? traffic picture, resulting in improved situational awareness. |
This unit, WHEN installed correctly performs EXCEPTIONALLY well ! During the FAA performance test, I was not able to cause even one error in the tracking data while performing various maneuvers at altitudes between 500 and 3000 ft. I use the GDL82 RS-232 GPS WAAS output for my Garmin GTR225 radios to pull in the frequencies from nearby airports. However, Garmin instructions are usually not written for inexperienced installers ! For example: It does not tell you that at first powering up the unit, that it may take a few minutes before the GPS WAAS signal becomes available (because the GPS portion, if not used (stored) for several months and shipped more than 600NM, needs a little time to find out where it is). Also some knowledge about HOW and WHERE to apply a ground and use shielding is a must. Although when you read the install manual (which you have to download from the internet), you will find some hints to that regard.
Have not had installed yet but excellent service as always. Aircraft spruce allways comes through in a timely manner. Definitely my go to place for all of my aviation needs. A+++++
Works great! Be sure to do the recommended post-installation checks. I found that transmitting on radio 2 killed the ADSB transmission (bad VHF antenna cable) Probably would not have known if I skipped the checks. Youâ??ll need a switch and LED if youâ??d like to take advantage of the Anon and Fail features. You may need a new blade-style antenna thatâ??s tuned for 978 MHz. See the installation instructions for the compete picture. Youâ??ll also need a windows 7+ laptop for the configuration and testing. If you donâ??t go with custom harnesses, youâ??ll need the proper crimping tools for the 15-pin and BNC/TNC connectors.
shipped quick good deal
Install took a few days of on and off work with my a&p. Worked great right from the start. Glad i went with this for my ads-b out.
Very happy and customer service was great with this purchase as well.
on time delivery
Normal, no charge shipping shipping was extremely fast. Ordered item at 4:30 PM Wednesday, Central time. Item on my door step at 3:00 PM the next day, Thursday.
Works as advertised, the pins to crimp are tiny and take tiny wires 22-24 gauge so be aware of that for the tools are $$ to buy. Flight test went very well for the adsb test. Computer formatting with laptop was straight fwd using printer cord except there is no mention to double click when curser is blinking in box to get it to type :/ ( maybe Im comp. illiterate lol ) This unit has an RS-232 output wire meaning you can output the waas gps antenna to other things .... another bonus which the tailbeacon does not have . Another thing is the transmit test was feeding through my garbage Ameriking elt but by unhooking coax at elt no problems for the test portion. All in All happy with this unit and seems to be solid so far.
Just installed the GDL-82 in my Twin Comanche with no install issues, install took 12 hours. Downloaded the Install Tool and the configuration went well. So far so good pulled plane the plane out of the hanger and did a ground check and everything booted up with no faults. I will do the test flight soon I dont see any issues moving forward. George K.
I am unable to review it as I havent had time to install it!! All the parts came in the package so Im hoping it will work as advertised!
So far no complaints. This is what the csr who dosent want to put much money into a system but have something that works. We have installed 2 so far. Some minor issues with installation but nothing we couldnt work through.
I have installed 4 of these. Easy and solid results. I am not a professional installer just a experimental homebuilder. I would discourage the pre-made harness as the wiring is very simple to make. Havent had any trouble with the USB pigtail or pins. One thought would be for Garmin to pre-crimp at least the USB pins at the factory to avoid issues. Especially if what another reviewer posted is correct and Garmin cant provide replacement pins for the USB pigtail. The rest of the harness could then be fabricated in the field. I added the anonymous mode remote switch to every install. The great thing about the 82 is no additional transponder antenna and being out only. That leaves the options for in wide open now and in the future.
As far as avionics go, this was amazingly simple to install. Had to be a bit intuitive/logical as directions were a bit weak. Attached to laptop, uploaded data, went flying. Flew the rule airspace, pulled my FAA report. Wow. Cool. Along with the Foreflight and Scout, Im complete IN/OUT! So far, so good!
I ordered the harness but only used the voltage in (red and black) wires as I had no other Garmin equipment to interface with. I paid for next day air on thursday, but I would have gotten it in the same time as regular ground.
easy install, programming is a pain sometimes. just getting the download program to work required calling garmin 3 times just to get the right person to help. Only wish Garmin would supply a sample FAA 337 form like Uaviox so we installers can get the document correct for FAA. That would make it a lot easier for both installers and FAA if there was a basic format to follow, knowing that there are variations due to the different aircraft and the STC is built around a Mooney install.
Delivered promptly in good condition. Unit worked as advertised. Wiring harness not so much. The wires for the anonoymous switch and annunciator light were in the box but not in the connector. Had to order and wait on a d-sub micro extraction and insertion tool to do the install. Blank pins were in the positions for those positions. Slowed the install down by a couple days and I paid for a completely wired harness.
Unit has not been installed at this time. Will follow up when done so.
This thing came with no literature/manual or where to go for the GDL 82 Config tool, but a call over the the customer service department and it was all emailed to me. Had to buy two cords: one for the GDL82 to the GPS antenna that came with (TNC Male to TNC Male cable) and a the second cable to hook the unit to the transponder (BNC male to BNC male cable). Recommend buying that harness with it since if you dont, you have to self install all the wires into the serial port plug and these guys do a quality job of getting all of it together if you order the harness. Supply 12VDC power and plug in the old school usb to your laptop and tell it your tail # and stall speed and shes all ready for flight. Worked like a charm and I validated it with the traffic display on foreflight and my stratux receiver. Cheapest way I could find to be 2020 compliant-if your an experimental guy at least.
Unit was easy to install. Much better GPS antenna than Apperos clunky one. I ordered the $75.00 cable which has power, ground and a pair of wires for rs232 connection (not needed if you use the GPS antenna... Biggest negative is the almost useless programming wire...it is only 6 long so if you need to put the unit in an out of the way place youre out of luck if you need to re program or update down the road. Next one I install Ill build my own cable.
First unit was dead, would not power up. There is no power indicator on the box, so dead is evidenced by failure to connect and configure, which could be wiring, your computer, or your USB A-B cord. Pinout Figure 5-1 has the middle row incorrectly indented right - should be indented left. The view is looking at the box. Would be nice if mounting holes matched a GTX327 rack. I mounted under the glove box. 2nd unit worked good and qualified for the $500 FAA rebate in time.
First of all, let me say that these complaints are directed at Garmin, not ACS who delivered the device in good shape in a timely manner. First of all, I didnt need the GA 35 antenna, but was forced to purchase one along with the GDL 82. I would like to see Garmin offer just the box without the antenna. Secondly, the unit comes with no instructions whatsoever. ACS has the 80 page installation manual here under Documents, so that has to be downloaded first. That document has most of the information you will need, but not all. As others have mentioned, the USB connector is cheap and has two #28 wires that require a special crimper. I ended up soldering mine. The instructions should have elaborated on crimping those tiny and fragile wires. If I had it to do over again, I would have ordered the optional harness. Garmin has a series of helpful videos that perhaps ACS might want to link here. https://fly.garmin.com/fly-garmin/support/articles/?tags=region_aviation&tags=product_aviationproductfamil&tags=region_avhowtooperation&searchText=gdl%2082 Finding the GD8X install tool at the Garmin site was difficult. One would have thought that the installation manual would have provided a link, but it didnt. Once I found it and installed it, it left an Icon on my desktop for the _install_ program, but not the _configuration_ program. I finally found the latter in C:/Program Files (X86)/Garmin/GDL 8X Install Tool/GDL8XInstallTool.exe. The program worked flawlessly when I finally found it and brought it up. I found my ICAO code on the FAA site by looking up the registration for my tail number. The last link that would have been helpful was the FAA ADS-B performance site where you can request a performance check when the installation is complete. https://adsbperformance.faa.gov/PAPRRequest.aspx . They send you a report via email 30 minutes after you fly. The installation was straightforward once I had all the information I needed, and the unit works as advertised.
Several mistakes by Garmin in Manual. The USB connector that they give you is cheap. This unit uses a High Density size 1 connector that is non replaceable from Garmin.
For the Canadian market this unit will not support min ADS-B requirements for Nav. Canada. The GDL 82 will not function in Canada as it does not produce the required 1090ES signal.

Ответ:The box comes with the GDL 82, GA 35 WAAS GPS and the installation kit. You will still need coax cables from the GDL 82 to the transponder antenna and the unit to the WAAS GPS antenna. You will also need wire to draw up the wire harness for the unit.
Ответ:No. The GDL 82 is only an ADS-B out unit. It does not perform ADS-B in functions.
Ответ:Yes, this kit comes with the Garmin GA 35 WAAS antenna.
Ответ:Yes, it is. Though you will want to get a transponder test to make sure your unit is operating properly.
Ответ:The GDL 82 powers on with the aircraft.
Ответ:Yes. The gdl-82 will interface with the 327 antenna output to make the signal compliant.
Ответ:You will need a BNC male to BNC male cable. BNC connectors are based on the inner pin, not the housing. The GA 35 WAAS GPS antenna has a TNC female antenna connector on it.
Ответ:Yes. Per Garmin, this unit will work with any mode C transponder that is in good working condition. A transponder test is recommended to ensure that the unit is operating properly.
Ответ:Yes, it is.
Ответ:You will need a GPS 20A with a connector kit and a GA 35 antenna. This unit can give GPS info to the G5 without having to buy a second antenna for the G5.
Ответ:Yes, it will.
Ответ:Yes. Per Garmin, this unit will work with any mode C transponder that is in good working condition.
Ответ:Yes. Per the manufacturer, the GDL82 has been tested with the AT150 with no issues. The AT150 should pass a transponder test to ensure that it is functioning properly.
Ответ:Per the manufacturer, it should function although a transponder test is recommended to ensure that your unit is operating properly.
Ответ:Yes. Per Garmin, this unit will work with any mode C transponder that is in good working condition. A transponder test is recommended to ensure that the unit is operating properly.
Ответ:Yes, both cannot be guaranteed.
Ответ:Yes, the GDL 82 will accept GPS data from an existing GNS 400W/500W series. No second GPS antenna is needed.
Ответ:Configuration of the GDL 82 has to be done via USB connection and computer, this would include inputting your iICAO code.
Ответ:Per Garmin, the only compatible GPS data sources are the GTN 6XX/7XX, GNS 4XXw/5XXW, or the GNS 480. The included GA 35 WAAS GPS Antenna would need to be installed.
Ответ:Approx Dims: 4.68 x 3.00 x 0.81 inches.
Ответ:The GDL 82 is a TSO ADS-B out solution that comes with the unit, rack, connector kit and GPS antenna. You can contact our avionics sales department for a PDF copy of the manual but it will be posted on Garmin's website soon.
Ответ:The antenna coax cannot be split but you can run a RS-232 lead from the GDL 82 to the G5 to share the GA 35 WAAS information.
Ответ:The Garmin GDL 82 has not yet received final approval. The units will be shipping as soon as that is complete, which is expected this month.
Ответ:Yes. That is the plan for the GDL 82. To provide this GPS information to other devices via a RS-232 input.
Ответ:The GDL82 harness includes - power/ground, RS232, USB dongle, anonymous mode, and squat switch provisions. It does not include an antenna cable.
Ответ:No, this cannot be installed with a Mode S transponder.
Ответ:Yes, the ICAO code for your aircraft is a set registration number. For U.S. based aircraft, the GDL 82 install tool will automatically compute your ICAO address based upon your registered tail number. For international aircraft, your ICAO code can be obtained from your aircraft registration authority.
Ответ:The GDL 82 can be installed by an A&P, and does not require purchase or installation through an avionics shop. The A&P must be able to test the transponder to verify the installation.
Ответ:The GDL 82 harness is made from some of the components included in the GDL 82 kit, so we do not sell it off the shelf currently. We can special order one for you, please contact our sales department for price quote and lead time.
Ответ:The 10 foot harness is fabricated by the Aircraft Spruce harness shop.
Ответ:Yes. Per Garmin, this unit will work with any mode C transponder that is in good working condition. A transponder test is recommended to ensure that the unit is operating properly.
Ответ:Yes. This unit can be sold to both experimental and certified aircraft and it can be installed by an A&P.
Ответ:No. The GDL 82 is only an ADS-B out unit. It does not perform ADS-B in functions and does not have any wireless capabilities. You would still need the GDL 39 or GDL 52 for ADS-B streaming to an iPad.
Ответ:The USB harness and plug is provided but, the user must supply the squat/airspeed switch.
Ответ:According to the manual, the GDL 82 does not communicate with the GTR 225. It will communicate with GTN 600/700 and GNS 400w/500w.
Ответ:For the transponder antenna, there are female BNC (need male BNC ends) for the GPS side it is a female TNC (need male TNC ends).
Ответ:PER THE GDL 82 manual: In anonymous mode, the GDL 82 transmits a temporary address instead of the aircraft's assigned ICAO address code, and a temporary Flight ID.
Ответ:The GTX 330 is a mode S transponder and the GDL 82 does not support mode S transponders. The GDL 82 only supports mode C only.
Ответ:Per the Garmin GDL 82 manual there is a discrete line to annunciate GDL 82 failure. But it will not interfere with the transponder signal, and continue to transmit mode a/c.
Ответ:Garmin gives a list of tested/approved antennas. There are other that work just not tested by Garmin. The list is available in the installation manual. The Install Manual is available as a free download in the Documents tab of this webpage.
Ответ:14v and 12v are interchangeable. It will work fine in your 12v application.
Ответ:The make and model of the aircraft, as well as the G-300s, is irrelevant when determining if this will work in your aircraft. The determining factor is that your aircraft is equipped with a functioning mode C transponder. We recommend having a transponder test done to determine that your transponder will pass and work with the Garmin GDL 82.
Ответ:Because the KT79 is a mode C this will work. Per the installation manual the antenna must be A-33W version to support WAAS.
Ответ:The harness comes with power, ground, usb port, and additional discrete lines.
Ответ:Yes. Each wire is labeled accordingly with a blue heatshrink label with text printed on it.
Ответ:The GDL 82 is a TSO'd product, it does not have an STC and does not need one to be installed.
Ответ:The GDL 82 is made to work with mode C transponders. Because the KT-73 is a mode S, it will not work.
Ответ:Yes, please contact our avionics sales team for a quote and lead time on a custom harness for the GDL 82.
Ответ:The gdl 82 is designed to be installed in an aircraft with a mode c transponder to provide ads-b out. So, if your RV has a mode C transponder, this will work great for your application.
Ответ:Yes, since the GTX 327 is a mode C transponder, this is compatible.
Ответ:Per the manual(page 10-2): the GDL 82 can operate without the squat switch. This is an optional function.
Ответ:Yes, all aircraft are required to be ADS-B out compliant by 2020. The GDL 82 is not recommended for use with the GTX 328 since the GTX 328 is a mode S transponder. Even though the GTX 328 is a mode S transponder, it does not fulfill the ADSB requirement since it does not have extended squitter technology. You will need to upgrade your transponder, we recommend the Garmin GTX 335 which is a complete ADS-B Out compliant installation.
Ответ:The 10 foot harness is terminated with the power/ground, rs-232 data line, and the usb programming port. Wires included but, not terminated to the connector, include the squat switch input, anonymous mode input, and ads-b failure annunciator interconnects. Connection to an existing transponder will require wiring the gdl-82 between your 327 output coax and your existing transponder antenna.
Ответ:The Garmin GPSMAP 296 is not a transponder, it is a portable GPS. There is not connection between these two units.
Ответ:While the Rami AV-22 does broadcast on the 1030 - 1090mhz frequency, it has not been tested by Garmin on the GDL-82. Garmin recommends the CI-101 antenna, part # 11-17970 which has been tested with the unit.
Ответ:Yes, you can perform the install, but you may still need a shop to sign off your ADS-B Out mandate compliance. Please check with your local FAA official to see what the process is to complete the mandate requirement sign off.
Ответ:Per the manual, the GDL 82 is wired to the transponder circuit breaker. The current must not reach 80% of the circuit breaker rated current. The GDL 82 works with both 14V and 28V systems.
Ответ:The GDL 82 can be installed by an A&P, and does not require purchase or installation through an avionics shop. The A&P must be able to test the transponder to verify the installation.
Ответ:Yes, this is compatible, you would use the RS232 wires for communication.
Ответ:Yes, this will work with the Micro Mode C transponder.
Ответ:You'll still need an altitude encoder with your transponder. The only GDL 82 interfaces with the transponder antenna output and the transponder antenna, there is no wiring that would affect the encoder.
Ответ:Yes, we will include that wire.
Ответ:The connector kit will include the connector, backshell, pins and the USB receptacle. If you would like, we do offer the unit with a harness, P/N: 11-15986 for an additional cost. Just use the dropdown selection on this web page and choose the "with 10 ft harness" model.
Ответ:Per the installation manual, you have to install the GA35 antenna.
Ответ:As long as your transponder is mode C and passes a transponder test, you can use it with the GDL 82.
Ответ:Referring to the transponder antenna. Do not exceed 10 ft. The closer to the antenna you are the better.
Ответ:Unfortunately there is not. You will need to either upgrade the GTX 330 to ES or get a new transponder. with ADS-B out capabilities.
Ответ:No, this is not supported.
Ответ:The difference between the two is that 11-15986 will include the wire harness. The wire for anonymous mode will be included. Coax will have to be a separate purchase. Please look at our custom coax cable assembly page.
Ответ:Garmin recommends the press to test indicators found under part # 11-03910.
Ответ:The GDL 82 is a TSO'd product, it does not have an STC and does not need one to be installed but will require a 337.
Ответ:This product is FAA TSO Approved and can be installed in a certified aircraft. There is no STC approved models list. It requires that a functioning Mode C transponder is already installed in the aircraft. As long as your Maule has the working mode C xpdr, it will work in your application.
Ответ:Yes. The GDL 82 can connect to the G5 via a RS-232 connection.
Ответ:The GDL 82 is designed to work with Mode C transponders.
Ответ:No, this is for the USA ADS-B system only.
Ответ:Yes, this is FAA Approved for use in certified aircraft.
Ответ:You do not need to upgrade to the ES to make the GDL 82 work. Since the GTX 330 is a Mode C transponder, it will work with the GDL 82, but you will need to install the included WAAS GPS antenna for full ADS-B out compliance.
Ответ:Per Garmin, you will have to install the anonymous mode switch.
Ответ:Yes, it can be mounted in any orientation. Since there is no ADAHRS module inside, the orientation has no specific requirement.
Ответ:Yes, the GDL 82 works well with most MODE C transponders.
Ответ:The GA35 is the only recommended antenna to use with the GDL82 per Garmin.
Ответ:If you currently have the GA35 WAAS/GPS antenna, it will work with the GDL82. However, a new antenna will come with the kit.
Ответ:The GA 35 antenna must be installed with hardware on top of the aircraft. Please refer to the installation manual for proper installation.
Ответ:Per the installation manual RG400 / RG142 will work for this.
Ответ:Yes it is.
Ответ:Yes, this, along with a Mode C transponder, will make you legal for the 2020 mandate.
Ответ:This unit uses an external GPS, it is the Garmin GA 35 WAAS GPS antenna.
Ответ:A GA 56 will not work as well. The GA 56 is a non WAAS GPS while the GDL 82 requires the GA 35, which is a WAAS GPS antenna. To be 2020 compliant, you must have a WAAS GPS source.
Ответ:The GPS signal cannot be split from the antenna. Also the GNC250XL is not a WAAS GPS unit so it will not work as a GPS source for the GDL 82. The GDL 82 also has an anonymous mode setting that is activated by a switch.
Ответ:The GDL 82 is approved by FAA TSO.
Ответ:It will not include a circuit breaker. This uses a 5 AMP breaker. Please refer to the manual for further information.
Ответ:Yes, the GDL 82 will accept GPS data from an existing GNS 400W/500W series. It must be the WAAS 430 or 530. No second GPS antenna is needed.
Ответ:Garmin does not have an AML for this.
Ответ:Yes , this is compatible you would use the RS232 wire for communication.
Ответ:The GDL 82 is only for ADS-B OUT only and cannot be modified for another function. The US is the only country with functioning ADS-B towers, however other aircraft equipped with ADS-B receivers will be able to see you as traffic in their units.
Ответ:The GDL 82 will work with the KT79 transponder. The only unit this system needs to interface with is the mode C transponder.
Ответ:The GDL 82 is made to interface with Mode C Transponders only. If the Collins xpdr is mode C this should work fine.
Ответ:The unit has a TSO so it will require a 337 form and a field approval.
Ответ:No, this unit is FAA Approved and is legal to install as an ADS-B out unit in certified aircraft. Please confirm with your A&P installer that the unit will work for your specific aircraft. This has been commonly installed in Cessna 210 aircraft.
Ответ:The GDL82 will not function in Canada as it does not produce the required 1090ES signal.
