Overview

Icom?s A220 panel mount transceiver is a popular fit with experimental and light sport pilots. The TSO approved version will work for all certified part 23 aircraft. This ground to air transceiver has the capability to work on both 8.33 kHz and 25 kHz channel spacing frequencies. It features the brightest OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) display on the market offering many advantages in brightness, vividness, high contrast, wide viewing angle and response time compared to a conventional display. The A220 also features a built in 2 station intercom, 12 or 24 volt compatible, automatic squelch and GPS memory function.

FAA TSO certification
The A220 TSO version meets RTCA-160G requirements for use in strict environments. This A220 version can be used for a primary VHF radio in general aviation (part 23) class aircraft. The A220 TSO version is also accepted for ETSO approval under the TSO/ETSO reciprocal acceptance policy.

Environmental Qualification Form
The A220 TSO version can only be serviced by Icom America Inc. All repairs or adjustment must be performed by Icom America as per the TSO approval requirements.

High visibility & readability
The OLED emits light from organic materials, so a display backlight is not required. It provides an extremely higher contrast and a very wide viewing angle of almost 180 degrees. In addition, the OLED display is set close to the front panel. Well laid out characters help identify important information like operating frequencies. White characters on a black background show clear easy to read operating information. With white key backlighting, the white OLED display matches modern plane?s instrument panel. In addition, the auto dimmer function adjusts the display for optimum brightness at day or night.

The A220?s display has a wide active area, so operating frequencies? characters can be maximized in the display, while operating status can be shown on both top and bottom. The A220?s OLED can display 4-level gray scale from darker gray to bright white and increases readability. This gradation is used, for example, in showing selected items in the settings menu.

Easy channel selection
It?s fast and easy to select any of memory channels in the A220. The ?flip-flop? arrow button switches between main and stand-by channels. The dualwatch function allows you to monitor two channels simultaneously. In addition, the auto stack memory stores the last 20 channels used and allows you to recall those channels easily. All switch buttons and knobs are illuminated with pure-white backlighting that is the same color as the OLED display.

Edward S 28.12.2018	No issues at all. Easy to use and understand. I have this set up as a COM2 with a PS Engineering PAR200A. The PAR200A is the intercom. As a COM the Icom A220 works well. Very happy with the unit.
Frank B 11.01.2018	Installed this radio into my Mooney Cadet and found the unit to be extremely difficult to setup for proper use. Took several attempts to get the correct balance between MC Gain and Squelch to just be able to hear anything with engine above 1500 RPM. Similar issue with side tone. After getting things working I went out with student. During takeoff power glitch briefily causing internal functions to switch such that we got not audio. After adjusting HP GAIN to recover audio the intercom went out. EXTREMELY UNRELIABLE OPERATION for aircraft radio
Dean D 03.10.2017	Nice radio but I had a press to talk issue when used with the KA134 audio panel. This panel isolates the transmit PTT using a diode from the speaker muting and sidetone circuits. I spent a bit of time trying to determine the issue and ways to make the new IC-A220T work. Correction will include installing Relays to the PTT circuit. The unit has a PTT logic that needs to pull completely to Ground or it will not key. Using a voltage divider circuit will not make it work. Installing relays will be the fix.
Steve 07.08.2017	I bought this radio to replace an ICOM A200. The A200 is less than 5 years old. The A200 has been sent to ICOM for repairs 2 times and now it will not transmit. Its unreadable. I selected the ICOM IC 220T with the MBA-3 adapter because it is advertised as plugin compatible and one bad radio should not ruin a product line. The radio slid right in to the existing rack and fit just like it should. I worked through all the functions and contacted ATC. The radio receives and transmits loud and clear - SOMETIMES. The pilot PTT is flakey, it works sometimes but usually not. The copilot PTT works every time. I reinstalled the old radio and the PTT works every time. Its not the PTT switch or wiring. I log on to the ICOM web site and discover this is a known problem when using an intercom. My PA22 has a 4 place Flightcom 403. The stated fix is to install a (2) relays and diodes in the PTT circuit(s) . This is not plug and play. I still need change the wiring and is why I am giving it a 2 rating.

Bill S 08.12.2020	Love the memory function. I fly to many of the same airports and this is a great way to have the frequency ready with out having to look up. Face is very bright and easy to work with. Well worth the price.
